Grooming and Coat Care

Proper grooming is essential for your dog’s comfort and physical health. The type of coat your dog possesses determines their specific needs.

General Advice for Long Coated Breeds (Including Doodles)

Metal Combs are your most important tool. A comb must be able to easily glide completely through your dog's coat to the skin. If you cannot easily comb through your dog's legs, feet, chest, or face, it indicates that those areas are matted. Coat sprays can help keep the coat from fraying (similar to split ends in humans) and reduce static during brushing.

  • Non Shedding or Lightly Shedding Long Coats (e.g., Doodles, Shih Tzu, Yorkie, Maltese, Poodle): These require brushing at least once every other day. Increased frequency is necessary after time spent in the rain, snow, or hiking.

  • Fluffy Shedding Coats (e.g., Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Great Pyrenees): These require thorough brushing at least once per week. Use a coat rake to remove dead undercoat, followed by a slicker brush for the topcoat, and finish with a metal comb to ensure no tangles remain. Pay close attention to the chest, behind the ears, the back, and the rear/tail.

  • Short Shedding Coats: These require less intensive maintenance. A quick brush out with a curry brush, a de shedding tool (used sparingly), and a comb to help remove the undercoat is typically sufficient to keep the skin moisturized and the coat shiny.
